Google has finally unleashed Android 15, starting with the first Developer Preview You can download it manually onto a Pixel 6, Pixel 7, Pixel 8 series phone, and also the Pixel Fold and Pixel Tablet. If you don't have a Pixel device, you can use the 64-bit system images with the Android Emulator in Android Studio starting today.

As is customary, Google has also revealed an Android 15 release timeline with the latest Developer Preview. It's very similar to the release trajectory of Android 13 and Android 14.

As you can see from the image above, the Android 15 release schedule aligns with what we saw last year. With the first Developer Preview now out the window, the second one is expected sometime between March and April, followed by the first Public Beta release. That's when regular folks who don't want to flash the Developer Preview manually will be able to experience Android 15 for the first time.

After a few beta releases, the software will near platform stability in June-July, followed by the final release. Google doesn't mention a month for the final Android 15 stable rollout. However, the final version of the software will likely roll out alongside the Pixel 9 series in October. We're saying that because Google rolled out Android 14 on the same day as the Pixel 8 lineup.

Naturally, the Android 15 release date for Pixel phones will precede other brands. Samsung and others should also start announcing the availability details of the new Android version around the same time as its final release.

Below are all the significant milestones for Android. We'll keep updating the list as and when Google releases fresh updates.

  • February 16, 2024 — Android 15 DP1
  • March 2024 — Android 15 DP2 (expected)

Every New Feature In Android 7.0 (Nougat)

Over 1500 emoji are now available to spruce up your conversations with friends and family members. Nougat has seen 72 completely new emojis added in, too.

Android 7.0 now allows you to use two or more languages at the same time, rather than having to choose one and sticking with it like in previous versions.

While some manufacturers such as Samsung have already implemented the multi-window view in their versions of Android for quite some time, Nougat sees the feature come as part of the stock version. This means you can now watch a movie or a highlight of the football while you send your friend a text.

Android 7.0 has gone all out with gaming by introducing Vulkan, and the VR platform, Daydream. Vulkan allows for high-performance 3D graphics, while Daydream is a platform for high quality virtual reality apps on mobile.

Android has used a Doze feature for quite some time to help users get the most out of their battery when the device is not in use. However, improvements have been made to Doze which means your device will go into a low power usage mode even when it's bouncing around your bag or pocket.

Nougat allows users to change the quick settings that they have when they drag down from the top of the screen. No longer will you have to drag down to reach that power saver mode, or to turn your torch on.

Notifications also get a spruce in Android 7.0, too. You'll now be able to reply directly to an SMS, WhatsApp, or other messages within your notifications without having to open the app. Nougat will also bundle all of your notifications from certain apps together to keep things clean and easy to check out without having to open each app. A long press on notifications will also hide them in future, too.

Nougat introduces a Data Saver feature which allows users to limit how much data your device uses. When turned on, background apps won't be able to access your cell data, preventing any surprise data charges.

You can now alter the size of text, icons, and everything else on your display with a handy option in your settings. Another icon present in some manufacturer versions of Android, but now available to the masses.

Android 7.0 introduces a number of different features to improve security. Seamless updates download in the background so you won't have to wait while your device syncs with the latest tools. File-based encryption allows users to better protect their files for individual users, and Direct Boot allows you to start your device faster and have apps run securely before using your password.

More Emojis Over 1500 emoji are now available to spruce up your conversations with friends and family members. Nougat has seen 72 completely new emojis added in, too. Android 15's First Developer Preview Is Here For Pixel

We may be a day later than initially anticipated, but Google has gone ahead and released Android 15 Developer Preview 1 for its Pixel devices. This is the first build of many to come in the testing phase of Android 15 before we see a stable release some time after July. We'll get more developer previews, see Android 15 hit the Android Beta Program, and then prepare for the full release to not only Pixel devices, but Samsung and OnePlus and others as well.

The Android 15 Developer Preview is available to the Pixel 6, Pixel 7, and Pixel 8 series, a well as the Pixel Fold and Pixel Tablet.

Download Android 15 Developer Preview 1: This first Android 15 Developer Preview is only for "developers," so that means most of you should not run to it and manually flash it on your daily Pixel phone. This could be very rough around the edges with plenty of broken features and should really only be considered if you need to flash it. That said, if you have an unused Pixel device sitting around, you could dive in and play around if curious.

For those in the Android 14 QPR beta program, you can install this first Android 15 DP without having to wipe your device, as long as you do it right away. Once on Android 15 previews, you'll get automatic downloads of future builds, so this should be the only time you'll need to manually install.

The first build of Android 15 is:

    Release date: February 16, 2024Build: AP31.240119.016Emulator support: x86 (64-bit), ARM (v8-A)Security patch level: February 2024Google Play services: 24.02.15API diff API 34 → V DP1

    Downloads: Factory ImagesOTA Files

For now, Google has provided factory image and OTA files that can be flashed. We have instructions for using either type of file here and here.

Android 15 Release Schedule: As a part of this first preview, Google has given us a breakdown of the release timeline for Android 15. Obviously, this is a first Developer Preview, with a monthly cadence of new previews to follow. Don't be surprised if you see X.1 updates in-between new builds too to fix bugs.

    Android 15 Release Schedule

Looking for the Android 15 Beta? As you know by looking at the schedule, you will have to give Google a couple of Developer Previews and then the Android Beta Program will open, probably in April. It looks like we'll get 2 Developer Previews and at least 4 Beta builds before a stable release sometime after July. This is very similar to the Android 14 schedule.

For now, again, this is developer-only stuff and requires manual work to get running. Most of you shouldn't take it on. Google specifically says as much in today's announcement post, so listen to them.

What's new in Android 15? We have a write-up on the developer-focused changes here. We'll have our typical "What's new" post with all of the fun changes here.
