Apple iPhone users, here's why you may want to 'avoid' Zoom app - Times of India Posted: 31 Mar 2020 08:11 PM PDT Video conferencing app Zoom has become one of the most popular free apps for iPhone and Android phone users with sudden surge in people working from homes due to coronavirus pandemic. However, it may not be a best choice for iPhone users as a new report by The Intercept claims that Zoom meetings aren't end-to-end encrypted as claimed by the company. On the other hand, for iPhone users, FaceTime is a better choice as FaceTime calls are always end-to-end encrypted, including group FaceTime calls with up to 32 participants. As per the report, a Zoom spokesperson confirmed the same and said, "Currently, it is not possible to enable E2E encryption for Zoom video meetings. Zoom video meetings use a combination of TCP and UDP. TCP connections are made using TLS and UDP connections are encrypted with AES using a key negotiated over a TLS connection." So, if Zoom meetings are not E2E encrypted so how are they actually secured? The report explains that the security features of the Zoom app are similar to using the web over HTTPS. While the connection is secured the video calls can be decrypted by a third party. One of the major reasons for the popularity of Zoom is that it is a free HD meeting app with video and screen starting for up to 100 people. One of the high points of the app is its simplistic user interface and the host of interesting features. The free version of the app enables users to add up to 100 participants in a call, users can also enjoy unlimited 1-to-1 meetings and 40 minutes of group callings. On the other hand, the encryption of iMessage and FaceTime are designed so that there's no way for even Apple to decrypt the data when it's in transit between devices. Also, Apple doesn't store the content of FaceTime calls on any servers. So, if you are doing a team meeting while working from home, it may be a good idea to ditch Zoom and opt for FaceTime instead while discussing something sensitive. Having said that there is no enterprise option for FaceTime yet and your best bet is still using group FaceTime. |
