Android Users Switching To IPhone Usually Purchase Legacy Or Less Expensive Models

  • CIRP said in today's report that those Android users who switch to the iPhone are male and make less money than existing iPhone users. Most of these iPhone buyers switch to a legacy model to save money; having said that, a surprising share will buy the latest Pro or Pro Max model.

    For the 12 months that ended in December 2023, 29% of Android users who made the switch to iPhone purchased the iPhone SE 3,  the iPhone 12, and the iPhone 13/iPhone 13 mini models. What is interesting here is that the percentage of iPhone owners upgrading to one of those models was lower at 21% over the same time period. During 2023, while 51% of Android switchers bought an iPhone 14 series model (that line was the most current available for 75% of 2023), 56% of those upgrading their iPhone ended up with the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

    CIRP discovered that 37% of Android switchers bought an iPhone 14 or iPhone 15 Pro series model while the number of iPhone users upgrading to one of those models was 43%. So why do Android users switching to an iPhone typically start with one of the lower-priced phones? CIRP suggests that one reason might be that many of them are coming from lower-priced Android phones and the legacy and non-Pro iPhone models fit their budget. That makes sense.

    Additionally, CIRP suggests that Android switchers might not feel the need to buy the latest iPhone model with all of the new bells and whistles. CIRP writes that for these new iPhone users, "entering the walled garden, using iMessage and FaceTime, and perhaps pairing their phone with AirPods is enough of an upgrade."


    CIRP Study Highlights IPhone 14 And 14 Plus As Top Choices For Android Users Making The Switch To Apple

    CIRP previously reported that 13% of new iPhone buyers in the US have switched from Android. Now, the good pals over at CIRP has shared a report that talks about the iPhone models that many Android users are switching to. What's the most popular iPhone model among ex-Android users? The data from the iPhone purchases in the US suggests that the most popular iPhone model for previous Android users is iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus. 26% of the Android users chose to get iPhone 14 and Plus as their first Apple phone in 2023. After the iPhone 14 Plus, 25% of the Android users bought iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

    This data shows that most Android users are not inclined towards getting the latest iPhone model as compared to Apple users who want to purchase the latest model as soon as it comes to the market. Android switchers also switched to iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro Max with 12% of the new purchases done by Android users. 11% of the Android users got iPhone 13 while 10% of the Android switchers purchased iPhone SE. 8% of them got iPhone 12 too. As iPhone SE and iPhone 12 are budget friendly and for many Android users, the prices of Apple phones are high, so they decided to get an affordable iPhone model to experience the IOS system instead of Google OS.

    On the other hand, the least iPhone model purchases made by iPhone users were for iPhone SE and iPhone 12. The purchases made for them were half the percentage of purchases by Android users. The most purchases made for an iPhone model by iPhone users were for iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max with 29% of the users purchasing them in 2023.

    Data Reveals That Apple Shouldn't Worry About Trying To Get Android Users To Switch To IOS

    According to data compiled by Consumer Intelligence Research Partners, LLC (CIRP), over the last five years, the percentage of iPhone buyers who switched from an Android phone to an iPhone ranged between 11% and 15%. In 2023, 13% of iPhone buyers switched from Android to iOS which was two percentage points less than the 15% that made the switch the year before. In the two prior years, 2020 and 2021, the percentage of iPhone buyers that came from an Android phone was 11% each year while that number in 2019 came to 13%. Considering that approximately 85% of iPhone purchases are made by consumers already using an iPhone, CIRP points out that the iPhone owner upgrade cycles are more important to iPhone sales than Android users deciding to switch to iOS. As far as Apple is concerned, it is more important to try to get an iPhone user motivated to upgrade to the latest model than trying to get Galaxy or Pixel users to make the change.

    Apple relies on current iPhone owners to generate growth

    Back in the earlier days of the iPhone and Android, Apple tried to "woo" Android users more aggressively. But Apple then used the so-called "walled gardens" in an attempt to get Android users to jump to iOS. A good example of this is the iOS Messages app which doesn't provide Android users with the same experience that iOS users have when messaging fellow iOS users. Android users who wanted the coveted blue bubble when messaging on iOS needed to switch to iPhone and this strategy worked to a degree.

    But now, Android users are looking beyond the blue bubble and simply want to be able to receive the same high-quality images from iOS users, get a read receipt, see a typing indicator, and have end-to-end encryption. This will happen later this year when Apple says it will support Rich Communication Services (RCS). But this won't cost Apple too much in iPhone sales considering the data that CIRP has presented us with.

    It seems that Apple does understand that it is current iPhone users that butter its bread. As a result, we should see Apple continue to stick with upgrades that make iPhone users share data and photos between themselves. A good example of this is the NameDrop feature added in iOS 17 that allows two iPhone users to swap their contact information by holding their phones close together.
